About this tool

Splitting a bill at a table means working out the tip, the tax and each person’s share at the same time. Enter the bill, the tip percentage, any sales tax and the number of people.

Common uses: Split restaurant bills, estimate service tips and compare per-person totals without doing the calculation at the table.

Practical example: Enter the bill before tip, choose a percentage that matches your preference, and confirm the number of people before using the per-person total.

Important limitation: Rounding can make the per-person amounts differ by a small amount from the exact total. Local customs and service charges may also change the final bill.

How it works

The tip is the bill times the percentage; the total is divided by the number of people and rounded to cents.

Real-world uses

Tipping and splitting without the arithmetic

Decide whether the tip applies before or after tax. The tip here is calculated on the bill amount you enter, and the sales tax field is added on top, so enter the pre-tax figure if that is how you tip. There is also an option to round each person’s share up to a whole number.

Check whether a service charge is already included in the bill, which is common in some countries and for large groups. Tipping customs vary widely, from 15 to 20 percent in the United States to little or none in parts of Asia and Europe, so use the local norm.

Per-person amounts can differ by a cent or two from the exact total because of rounding. If the group wants to round up, add a little to the tip percentage until the per-person figure is a convenient number.

Tips for better results

Frequently asked questions

Does the tip include the full bill?

The calculation applies the percentage to the bill amount entered. Check whether your local bill already includes a service charge.

Can I split unevenly?

This workflow calculates an even split; use the total tip and bill values when people need to contribute different amounts.

Are my calculations uploaded?

The calculation is done in your browser; nothing is stored.

Does the tip apply to the full bill?

It applies to the bill amount you enter. Decide whether that includes tax.

Why do per-person amounts differ slightly?

Rounding to cents can create small differences.

Should I tip on the amount before or after tax?

Either is accepted. Many people tip on the pre-tax subtotal. Enter the amount you want the tip based on.

How do I split a bill evenly?

Enter the number of people and the tool shows each person’s share of the total including tip and tax.

Why do the per-person amounts add up to slightly more or less?

Each share is rounded to cents. The small difference comes from rounding, not from an error in the calculation.
