How to use Unit Converter
- Choose a categoryLength, weight, speed, temperature, area, volume and more.
- Select unitsPick the source and target units and enter a value.
- Swap or copyUse swap to reverse the conversion.
About this tool
Recipes, travel, schoolwork and product specifications all mix units. Choose a category, pick the source and target units, and the converted value appears instantly, with a swap button for the reverse direction.
Common uses: Convert measurements for recipes, travel, DIY projects, schoolwork, fitness and product specifications without doing manual arithmetic.
Practical example: Choose the measurement category first, confirm the source and target units, then use the swap control when you need the reverse conversion.
Important limitation: The conversion is mathematical. It does not account for context-specific factors such as material density, local measurement conventions or instrument accuracy.
Conversions are calculated in your browser. Read the privacy information.
How it works
Each unit is defined relative to a base unit, so a value is converted to the base and then to the target unit; temperature uses its own formulas.
Real-world uses
- Following a recipe from another country
- Checking travel distances
- Converting engineering units
Converting units without common mistakes
Pick the category before the units, because the list of units depends on it. Temperature conversions are not simple multiplication: Fahrenheit to Celsius subtracts 32 and then multiplies by 5/9, and the tool handles that for you. Volume units here are US gallons, quarts, cups and fluid ounces; imperial (UK) measures are about 20 percent larger, so check which system your recipe or fuel receipt uses.
Digital storage is a common source of confusion. The tool offers both families: KB, MB and GB use powers of 1,000, as storage makers do, while KiB, MiB and GiB use powers of 1,024, which is how many operating systems count. That mismatch is why a “1 TB” drive shows less capacity on your computer.
The conversion is mathematical. Real-world quantities, such as cooking by weight versus volume, also depend on density, which a unit converter does not know.
Tips for better results
- Remember US and UK gallons differ.
- Temperature conversions use offsets, not just ratios.
- Round only the final result.
Frequently asked questions
Can I reverse a conversion?
Yes. Use the swap control to exchange the source and target units, then enter the value you want to convert.
Are the results rounded?
The display rounds the result for readability. Use the shown precision as a practical estimate rather than laboratory-grade measurement.
Are my calculations uploaded?
Conversions are calculated in your browser.
Are the conversions exact?
They use standard conversion factors. Context such as density is not included.
Which categories does it support?
Length, weight, temperature, volume, speed, area, digital storage, pressure and energy.
Does it use US or imperial gallons?
US units: a US gallon is about 3.785 litres. An imperial (UK) gallon is about 4.546 litres, so convert separately if your source is British.
Can I convert in reverse?
Yes. Use the swap button between the two unit boxes to reverse the direction.
