Background Remover (Beta)

Create a transparent PNG from an image with a clean background using edge-connected detection that better protects similar colors inside the subject.

Quick answer: Choose an image, use the recommended edge-connected mode or a background color, adjust tolerance and softness, optionally trim empty edges, then preview and download the PNG.

How to use Background Remover (Beta)

  1. Choose a clear imageImages with a plain, evenly colored background and good contrast between subject and background work best.
  2. Tune tolerance and softnessRaise tolerance until the background disappears, then add a little softness to smooth the edge. Lower tolerance if parts of the subject start to vanish.
  3. Preview and saveCheck the result against both light and dark backgrounds. Use the touch-up brush to erase leftover background or bring back parts that were removed by mistake, then download a transparent PNG.

About this tool

This is a color-and-edge method rather than AI. It works best on photos with an even background, such as a product on white, and runs entirely on your device, so the picture never leaves it.

Common uses: Prepare product photos, profile images, thumbnails and simple cutouts for presentations or online listings.

Practical example: Use edge-connected detection when the subject contains similar colors inside it, then adjust tolerance and softness while checking the preview around hair and fine edges.

Important limitation: This is a lightweight browser tool, not a studio-grade AI segmentation service. Busy backgrounds and low-contrast edges may need manual cleanup.

Background removal runs in your browser on a copy of your image; the photo is not uploaded. Read the privacy information.

How it works

Starting from the image border, the tool finds connected pixels whose color is within your tolerance of the background and makes them transparent, then softens the edge. Pixels enclosed inside the subject are preserved.

Real-world uses

Getting a clean cut-out

Start with the Edge-connected background setting. It only removes background that touches the border of the picture, so a white shirt on a white wall is handled better than with a simple color match. Raise the tolerance until the background disappears, then lower it if parts of your subject start to fade.

Add a little edge softness to avoid a harsh, cut-out look, and check the result on the checkerboard, white and dark previews. Hair, glass and shadows are the hardest areas for any simple tool. The touch-up brush lets you erase leftover background or restore parts removed by mistake.

For best results photograph the subject against a plain wall with even light, and avoid shadows that fall across the background. Complex scenes are better handled by AI background removers, at the cost of uploading your image.

Tips for better results

Frequently asked questions

Does it remove every background automatically?

It works best when the background is connected and visually distinct. Use tolerance and softness controls to refine the result.

What output should I use for transparency?

Download PNG when you need the background to remain transparent.

Are my files uploaded?

Background removal runs in your browser on a copy of your image; the photo is not uploaded.

Why are parts of my subject disappearing?

Their color is close to the background color. Lower the tolerance, or choose edge-connected mode so only background touching the border is removed.

Is this AI background removal?

No. It is a lightweight color-and-edge method that runs locally. It is fast and private but will not match studio AI on complex scenes.

Which file format should I save?

PNG, which keeps transparency. JPG cannot be transparent.
