How to use Password Generator
- Pick a modeRandom characters, passphrase from a 7,776-word list, or numeric PIN.
- Set the optionsLength, symbols, exclusions, look-alike characters, no repeats, separators and how many to make.
- CopyCopy a single password or the whole list.
Good to know
Common uses: New accounts, password managers, Wi-Fi keys and shared credentials.
Practical example: Choose Passphrase, four or more words, and add a number for a password that is easy to type and hard to guess.
Important limitation: Strength shown is an estimate based on how the password was generated. Use unique passwords for every account and store them in a password manager. Only your settings are remembered on this device, never the passwords.
For sensitive work, read the privacy information and follow your organization’s data-handling policy.
How it works
Random values come from the browser’s cryptographic generator, with unbiased selection. Passphrases use the EFF Long Wordlist, credited under CC BY 3.0 US.
Real-world uses
- Creating account passwords
- Making memorable passphrases
- Generating PINs and shared keys
Tips for better results
- Longer beats complicated; 16 or more characters is a good default.
- Use a passphrase when you need to type it from memory.
- Use a password manager and turn on two-factor authentication.
Frequently asked questions
Are the passwords really random?
Yes. They use the browser’s cryptographically secure random generator.
What is a passphrase?
Several random words joined together, from the EFF Long Wordlist. They are long, strong and easier to remember.
Are passwords stored or sent?
No. Only your settings are saved in your browser, never the passwords.
What does the entropy figure mean?
It estimates how many guesses an attacker would need, in bits. Higher is stronger.
Can I avoid look-alike characters?
Yes. You can skip characters like O, 0, l and 1.
Is the Password Generator free?
Yes.
