About this tool

A WebP picture with a transparent background, such as a logo saved from a website, cannot always be opened in a desktop editor or dropped into a document. PNG is the format almost everything accepts that also supports transparency. This page converts WebP to PNG in your browser, so the transparency survives and nothing is uploaded.

Practical example: Convert a transparent WebP logo saved from a website to PNG, then place it on a slide or a document without a white box around it.

Important limitation: Files can become much larger, animation is lost, and metadata is not copied.

Conversion happens in this browser tab. The images are never uploaded. Read the privacy information.

How it works

The browser decodes each WebP including its alpha channel, draws it on a transparent canvas and encodes it as a lossless PNG.

Real-world uses

When PNG is the right target for a WebP

Choose PNG over JPG whenever the picture has transparent areas, sharp text or flat colors, or when you plan to edit it again. JPG would turn transparency into a solid color and blur fine edges. PNG keeps the pixels exactly as the browser decodes them.

Expect the files to be larger, sometimes much larger. WebP’s compression is more efficient than PNG’s, particularly for photographs, so a 200 KB WebP photo can become several megabytes as PNG. If the picture is a photograph without transparency, JPG is almost always the better choice and gives a far smaller file.

Converting does not recover quality lost in a lossy WebP. The PNG is a faithful copy of what the WebP shows, and further edits will no longer add compression loss. Think of PNG as a safe working format rather than a way to improve the picture.

Animated WebP files are not animated after conversion; only a single frame is produced. If you need to preserve an animation, keep the original file.

Tips for better results

Frequently asked questions

Will the transparent background be kept?

Yes. PNG supports transparency, and transparent areas in the WebP remain transparent in the PNG.

Why is the PNG so much bigger?

WebP compresses much more efficiently than PNG, so converting back can multiply the size. Use JPG instead if the image is a photo with no transparency.

Does PNG improve the quality of a WebP?

No. It preserves what the WebP shows and stops further compression loss when you edit and re-save.

What happens to animated WebP?

Only a still image is created. Keep the original if you need the animation.
