About this tool
Turning a PDF into Word is easy when the PDF contains real text and awkward when it is a scan. This tool covers both: it reads the text layer when it exists, and falls back to OCR when the pages are pictures.
Common uses: Create an editable starting point from reports, invoices, applications and scanned documents without uploading the source file.
Practical example: Try text-layer extraction first because it is faster and preserves the original characters. Choose OCR for scans, then open the DOCX and correct layout or recognition issues before relying on it.
Important limitation: This browser-first export is text-first, not a pixel-perfect layout converter. OCR accuracy depends on scan quality, language, rotation and contrast; tables, columns, images and complex formatting may need manual cleanup.
Text extraction and OCR run in this tab using libraries and language data served from this website. The PDF is not uploaded. Read the privacy information.
How it works
Text is read from the PDF’s text layer, or recognized with OCR for scans, then organized into paragraphs and written out as a DOCX, text file or searchable PDF.
Real-world uses
- Reusing text from a report you no longer have the source for
- Digitizing a scanned letter
- Extracting a contract’s text for review
Text layer or OCR: how to tell, and what to expect
Open the PDF and try to select a sentence with your mouse. If the words highlight, the file has a text layer, and the fast Text layer method gives the most accurate result, because it copies the characters directly. If nothing can be selected, the page is an image and you need OCR.
OCR guesses letters from pixels, so accuracy depends on the scan: straight, sharp, high-contrast pages at about 300 DPI work best, and handwriting does not work well. The tool offers English, Spanish, French and German recognition, and a High detail setting for small print that uses more memory.
The DOCX is text-first. Paragraphs come across, but columns, tables, text boxes and exact fonts usually need tidying in Word. Always proofread numbers and names, and keep the PDF as your reference.
Tips for better results
- Digital PDFs convert more accurately than scans. Use 300 DPI scans for OCR.
- Expect simple text to convert well and complex columns or tables to need manual cleanup.
- Set the OCR language to match the document.
Frequently asked questions
When should I use OCR?
Use OCR for scanned or image-only PDFs where selecting text does not work.
Will the DOCX preserve the exact PDF layout?
Not always. The export prioritizes editable text; complex columns, tables, images and design elements may require manual adjustment.
Are my files uploaded?
Text extraction and OCR run in this tab using libraries and language data served from this website. The PDF is not uploaded.
Will the layout match exactly?
This is a text-first conversion, so complex layouts, columns and tables may differ. Review before editing.
Will my Word document look exactly like the PDF?
Not pixel for pixel. This is a text-first export, so reading order and paragraphs are preserved but complex layout such as columns, tables and floating images may need manual cleanup.
Which languages can OCR read?
English, Spanish, French and German. Choose the language that matches the document before running OCR.
How long does OCR take?
It depends on the page count and the detail setting. A single clear page takes a few seconds; a long scan can take minutes, so convert only the pages you need.
