About this tool

A password-protected PDF is fine until you need to merge it, compress it, annotate it or run it through another tool, and every one of those refuses a locked file. If you were given the password legitimately, the simplest fix is a clean, unprotected working copy. This page creates one in your browser, so neither the document nor its password is sent anywhere.

Practical example: You receive a locked bank statement and need to merge it with two other PDFs. Unlock it with the password the bank sent, merge the unprotected copy, then protect the final bundle again.

Important limitation: The correct password is required. Files with other restrictions or unsupported encryption may not open, and the tool does not guess passwords.

The PDF and its password are processed in this browser tab with a library served from this website. Nothing is uploaded. Read the privacy information.

How it works

The tool loads the PDF with the password you supply using a standards-aware PDF library, then writes a new copy without encryption.

Real-world uses

What unlocking does, and the limits that matter

Unlocking uses the password to open the document and then saves it again without encryption. The pages, text and images are unchanged. It is similar to opening the file in a viewer, entering the password and saving a copy, except that text, links and quality are kept.

It cannot recover a forgotten password, and it is not designed to bypass protection on documents you have no right to open. If you do not know the password, ask the person or organization that created the file. There is no workaround here, and a tool that claims to open any PDF is either guessing for a very long time or is not what it seems.

This tool is built for the common case, a PDF that asks for a password before it will open. Some files open freely but restrict printing, copying or editing, and those restrictions are a different setting that this page does not promise to remove. If the tool cannot open a file, the message it shows says why.

After unlocking, treat the copy as sensitive. It no longer asks for a password, so anyone who finds it can read it. Store it where the original was, finish your task, and delete it when you are done. If you need to share the result, add a new password with the Password Protect PDF page.

Tips for better results

Frequently asked questions

Can this unlock a PDF if I forgot the password?

No. It needs the correct password to open the file. If you have lost it, contact whoever created the document.

Is the original file changed?

No. The tool creates a new unprotected copy and leaves the locked original as it is.

Is my password sent anywhere?

No. The file and the password stay in this browser tab, and nothing is uploaded.

Why would I unlock a PDF?

Most tools, including merging, compressing, annotating and form filling, cannot work on a locked file. An unlocked working copy lets you use them.

Will the unlocked PDF look the same?

Yes. Pages, text, images and links are kept. Only the password protection is removed.
